The Go Slow Life and Priorities
Life lately for me has not been very slow, I'll be the first to confess to that. It's been entirely too fast.
Too many appointments
Too many tasks
Too much rushing
Not enough silence
Not enough nature
Not enough presence
Does this sound like you sometimes? I definitely go through cycles. I'm learning how to preserve my Slow Life as much as possible, but it's a work in progress. (Just sitting down to write this blog post uninterrupted is a tremendous start!)
Living a Slow Life means first getting clear on your own priorities. And when someone tries to test those priorities, holding a boundary.
(Holding a boundary with grace and compassion is a skill that is second-to-none and yet quite tricky to cultivate.)
Being malleable with your boundaries leaves you resentful and angry.
For me, my priorities are, in order of importance:
- Family - Children, husband, sisters, parents, grandparents, extended family, beloved friends
- Physical health - Regular and consistent exercise, regular sleep, balanced nutrition
- Financial health - Avoidance of debt/fees, organization of financial plans, consistent income
- Growth and self-improvement - Learning new ways to love and live more deeply every day
- Clean / tidy space - Clean and organized spaces reduce mental stimulation and anxiety
Going slow allows you to see when your life is flowing in a way where your priorities are out of whack. When something moves higher up on the priorities list than it belongs, and/or something makes its way on to your priorities list without your consent, that's when resentment and burnout enter in.
Go slow, and listen to your heart.
What are your top 5 priorities?
